To recap, linear referencing lets you store geographic information without a large number of explicit
x-y coordinates. Instead, a measure (distance) along a linear feature is provided. Linear referencing is a
mechanism that allows you to associate multiple sets of attributes to portions of linear features.
One way to view linear referencing is “features within features.” Because of this, some new terminology
and tools are necessary to understand and operate linear referencing. We address those in the Step-by-
Step section that follows.
