making use of census results. It is worth mentioning that the TIGER file is a “flat” file. This means that
there is no hierarchy—such as putting the records of a given state together and then requiring the user to
know which state file a record came from. Each record contains all the information necessary to locate the
place in the geographic space of the United States to which the record refers.
What follows is what the primary record in the TIGER line files looks like.
The primary TIGER record (called a Type 1 record) is 228 characters long. Broken up into six logical
pieces, here is a typical record. Each of the six pieces is explained in the list that follows, beginning with
“Record type.”
