ing the sodding thing, I had cuts and bruises from the effort, I'd put friendships at risk, sworn
at inanimate objects and the thing had just upped and died. I was furious and no amount of
children's tears were going to change my mind that this ex-rabbit had done this deliberately
just to annoy the hell out of me.
'Never again!' I said. 'That's the last one. That run is bloody brilliant and it got twenty
minutes of use! What a waste!'
There was an uncomfortable silence as three adults and five children tried their best not to
anger me further.
'Perhaps you could use it for hens?' said Rebecca, which cheered Natalie and the boys up,
got a look of 'What are you doing?' from John and stony silence from me.
She was right, though, and as Tallulah and Lola nervously scraped around their run and
pecked at the ground it really did seem ideal. The dogs were hovering a bit close and the cats
were sat on top of it obviously weighing up the whole thing, but the new arrivals didn't seem
unduly stressed. Maybe they realised that it was definitely better than a tight squeeze in a Le
Creuset casserole dish. Finally, I thought, stress-free animals and ones that may actually pay
their way.
'Right then,' I said, clapping my hands together, 'who wants eggs for breakfast tomorrow?'
