Figure 2.12 These are 852 groups of unemployment office areas that super-
vised the allocation of benefit payments in the 1980s (former poor-law union
areas). They were combined to create a consistent base for comparison over
time. Notice the new shape to the area over which the eye-catching blackspot
of Corby is shaded. The Southern Scottish islands are now given names such as
'Campbeltown'.
