Figure 2.3 The first of a series of maps showing unemployment from the 1981
census on equal land area maps with automatic annotation. The 17 areas here
were regions used by the European Community during the 1980s to present
coarse statistics about Britain and allocate regional grants. Above this level of
amalgamation Britain is often divided into 11 regions, or just England, Scotland
and Wales.
