Figure 1.14 The most noticeable pattern here is of the mining jobs, which were
lost after the national miner's strike of 1984. They were lost in greatest numbers
in Yorkshire, where support for the strike had been strongest. The National Coal
Board was the biggest employer in many towns in that county. Manufacturing
declined much more than service industries.
