Figure 10.6 In the 1950s and 1960s, most marginal seats were very strongly
contested, shown here in pale shades, indicating high turnout. In 1970 the safest
Conservative and Labour seats also had a high turnout. During the 1970s the
composition is seen to change and the pattern of turnout alters to reflect this swing.
The Northern Irish seats move out of the triangle as new parties appear there.
