The Distribution of
Childhood Leukaemia
in Britain, 1966-1983.
Smoothed Surface of
Cases in Population Space.
District centroids labelled.
Figure 9.6 The distribution of 9411 incidents of childhood leukaemia (from
the National Cancer Registry) are shown as a surface with contours of colour,
smoothed by the use of kernels over the equal enumeration district population
cartogram. This is an extremely even distribution, with some inevitable random
variation. There are no definite clusters shown, but recognizing a random pattern
is quite difficult. Note: parts of original image were produced as a bit-map of
pixels of colour not as a vector graphics file of lines, curves and areas.
