Figure 5.6 It is easier to compare a series of cartograms when there are fewer
areas - 64 counties here - and some with distinctive sizes. Yet part of the impres-
sion here is not correct but an artefact of the areal units chosen. The black spots
in London are partially cancelled out by nearby very prosperous areas. The south-
ernmost spot, dark in later years, is the Isle of Wight, an interesting anomaly.
