Figure 4.11 These distributions show a well-defined set of patterns. Concentra-
tions of both unemployed and inactive (orange) adults dominated many areas of
the country including all the large inner cities and the Welsh coalfields. The South
coast was highlighted by high proportions of the inactive (mostly retired) group.
And in rings around London and other cities those in work dominated.
