products, records, clothes and fabrics. Cool vintage stalls,
food vendors and indie shops cluster in “Brixton Village”

Coldharbour Lane, while Brixton Station Rd also sees a
farmers' market on Sunday (10am-2pm) and themed
markets each Sat (10am-5pm). Arcades: Mon
8am-6pm, Tues-Sun 8am-11.30pm; street stalls:

W broadwaymarket.co.uk; ! Bethnal Green; map

Camden Camden High St to Chalk Farm Rd, NW1
W camdenlock.net; ! Camden Town; map pp.284-
285. This legendary market - once beloved of hippies,
punks and goths, and now a firm favourite with European
tourists - is actually a gaggle of markets, a mass of
hundreds of stalls - arts, crafts and clubwear, records,
furniture, trinkets and jewellery, and, in the Stables Market
area especially, excellent vintage/antique stuff - segueing
into each other to create one enormous shopping district.
Lively shops add hip designers, antique dealers,
restaurants, bars and booksellers to the mix. Daily, roughly
9.30am-6pm, with more stalls at the weekend.
Chatsworth Road Chatsworth Rd, E5
W chatsworthroade5.co.uk/market; Hackney Central
Overground; map p.190. Regenerated old Clapton market
with an as yet unpretentious neighbourhood feel, catering
to the mixed local population with vintage clothes, fab
food stalls, used books, arts and crafts and plants. Sun
11am-4pm.
Ì Columbia Road Columbia Rd, E2 W columbiaroad
.info; Shoreditch High Street or Hoxton Overground;
map pp.192-193. Fabulous, funky flower market in the
heart of the East End, with bargains galore, especially late
in the day. Get here early, grab breakfast in one of the many
cafés or coffee stalls, and check out the area's increasingly
hip shops while you're at it. Sun 8am-3pm.
Greenwich Greenwich High Rd, SE10
W greenwichmarket.net; Greenwich train station from
Charing Cross or Cutty Sark DLR; map p.315. Sprawling
set of covered flea markets with some 150 stalls selling
everything from bric-a-brac to furniture. Tues, Wed & Fri-
Sun are best for arts, crafts and food; for antiques and

streets, and the shops inside the covered market, offer
more treasures. Stalls Tues-Sun 10am-5.30pm.
Maltby Street Maltby St, SE1; ! Tower Bridge; map
pp.224-225. Rapidly rivalling the nearby Borough Market,
this lower-key (and cheaper) foodie destination huddles
under the arches near Tower Bridge and spreads along

action is on the lively Ropewalk, which has some excellent
pop-up bars and streetfood stalls. Sat 9am-2pm, Sun
11am-4pm.
Petticoat Lane Middlesex St and around, E1; !
Liverpool Street; map pp.192-193. Cheap, cheerful and
multicultural, this famous clothes and bric-a-brac market
(there's a lot of tat) is big, bustling and deliciously
ungentrified. Famously, it's where Lord Alan Sugar, of The
Apprentice fame, started out as a young stall trader. Mon-
Fri 10am-4pm, Sun 9am-3pm.
Portobello Road Portobello and Golborne rds, W10
and W11 W shopportobello.co.uk; ! Ladbroke
Grove or Notting Hill Gate; map pp.274-275.
Probably the best way to approach this enormous
market, or rather markets, is from the Notting Hill end,
winding your way through the antiques and bric-a-brac
down to the fruit and veg, and then via the hip fashion
stalls under the Westway to the thriving vintage scene at
Portobello Green ( W portobellofashionmarket.com). The
Golborne Rd market is cheaper and less crowded, with
antique and retro furniture on Fri and Sat (food and bric-
a-brac Mon-Thurs). Antique market: Sat 8am-6pm;
Portobello Green: Fri-Sun; Golborne Rd: Mon-Sat.
Ridley Road Ridley Rd, E8; Dalston Kingsland
Overground; map p.291. A bustling, very cheap food and
clothes market in the heart of Hackney. African and
Caribbean fruit, veg and fish predominate, but there are
also Turkish and Asian staples and a long line of shops
offering fabrics, hair and beauty products, old gospel
albums, cheap shoes and much else. Mon-Thurs
6am-6pm, Fri & Sat 6am-7pm.
Spitalfields Commercial St, between Brushfield and
Lamb streets, E1 W spitalfields.co.uk; ! Liverpool St;
map pp.192-193. The East End's historic Victorian fruit
and veg hall now houses an upmarket designer/makers,

themed markets each Saturday. The surrounding shops and
restaurants are excellent, too. Market: Mon-Fri
10am-5pm, Sat 11am-5pm, Sun 9am-5pm; shops &
restaurants: daily.
