Shops and markets
From the folie de grandeur that is Harrods to the hip street markets of the
East End, London is a shopper's playground - whether you want to spend
enormous amounts of money, loading yourself up with posh bags of
designer gear, or to rifle around scruffy markets seeking out quirky treasures
for a few quid. As befits a city of villages, London's shopping districts all
have their own flavour, and many of them are known for their specialities
- Oxford Street's the place to head for chains and department stores;
Jermyn Street for upmarket gentlemen's outfitters; Charing Cross Road for
used books; Brick Lane for vintage, for example. In the sections that follow,
we've listed shops according to what they sell, rather than by area, and have
erred away from chain stores unless they display some distinctive - and
distinctively British - style.
