London's lesbian and gay scene today is so huge, diverse and well
established that it's easy to forget just how fast it has grown and been
accepted into the mainstream over the last couple of decades. Political
progress has been accompanied by a depoliticized scene, as pink power
has given way to the pink pound and gay liberation to gay lifestyle. As a
result, straight Londoners tend to be a fairly homo-savvy bunch and are
happy to embrace and even dip into the city's queer offerings. The gay
community currently clusters in three main areas: though Soho remains
gay London's spiritual heart, Vauxhall is home to the big clubs, while
Dalston and around is fast becoming something of a third leg to the gay
scene in London.
