area can get extremely busy, but this one is big enough to
soak up the crowds and remain pleasant. There are some
cosy booths downstairs and a good range of beers. Mon-

Bright little real ale bar -an offshoot of Borough Market's
Utobeer crafts beer stall - with regularly changing draught
beers from Germany, America, Belgium and Holland, as
well as more than a hundred bottled beers from around the

quiet and attractive spot in the heart of old Rotherhithe, is
steeped in history. The blackened brick walls, wonky timber
frames and creaky floorboards give it character, while the
terrace offers splendid Thames views. Decent real ales from
the Mayflower microbrewery, and occasional barbecues.

pp.224-225. A pleasant stop-off on this foodie street, the
spacious Woolly serves real ales and a good range of other
drinks in a tiled ground-floor space, a quiet upstairs room
and a sunny garden. You can eat seasonal British pub food,
or head across the road to the swanky Garrison gastropub
- all scrubbed wood, mismatched chandeliers and artisan
suppliers. Mon-Sat 11am-11pm, Sun 11am-10.30pm.

local, with hanging baskets on the outside and dark
wooden tables and green leather benches inside. There's an
elegant dining area, too, and a pleasant courtyard. There
are half a dozen first-class ales on offer. Mon-Sat

Road; map p.252. Brilliantly located in a quiet mews around
a 10min walk from the Royal Albert Hall, and serving real
ales, speciality beers and interesting food, this great spot is
popular with musicians from the nearby Royal College of

KNIGHTSBRIDGE

251. Hidden away in a private mews, this charming little
pub was Wellington's local and his o cers' mess; the
original pewter bar survives, and there's plenty of military
paraphernalia on display. Daily noon-11pm.

pp.250-251. A convivial, quirky and down-to-earth pub
in a posh cobbled mews, with dark wood panelling, china
handpumps and walls crammed with vintage prints - the
unusual sunken back room has a flagstone floor and fires in
winter. Mobile phones are banned; this is a place to relax
with your fellow drinkers. Mon-Sat 11am-11pm, Sun

pub with a large open sitting room and a murky past:
allegedly, it was from here that the Great Train Robbery was

Decent, spacious neighbourhood pub, which may not be
quite the sum of its parts - reasonable food, a good range
of beers, plenty of spots to choose from - but is still a good
