kitschy vintage decor at this tiny soda fountain is as much a
draw as the fab fifties-style food (shakes and sundaes,
toasties, hotdogs, bagels, sponge cakes). Perch at a tiny
formica table, order an Elvis cupcake and a root beer shake,
check out the juke box and feel your mood lift. Daily.

booths and unchanging menu, this traditional eel, pie and
mash shop offers a uniquely nostalgic experience (not least
in the prices - pie and mash costs around £5). In the
evenings, it's taken over by a Modern European restaurant,
where £30 gets you a simple but good three-course meal,

and Kurdish restaurant specializes in charcoal-grilled
dishes, but ordering a selection of hot and cold starters
(meze, from £3) will get you a delicious, inexpensive meal.
Mop them all up with the smoky Turkish bread that's
freshly prepared at the front of the restaurant.

Ottolenghi's vibrant cuisine raised the bar for
Mediterranean food in Britain, and this modern café-
restaurant, with long communal tables, is a buzzy spot to
enjoy his trademark imaginative salads and fantastic
desserts (check out those meringues!). They do breakfast,
too, with table-top toasters and piles of newspapers. It's
not, in any way, cheap. Takeaway available. Branches in
