In-Depth Information
We cover the full range of eating options from cheap-and-cheerful pitstops via a few
fashionable favourites to London's smartest destination restaurants. Among the cafés ,
you'll find bakeries, brasseries, chippies, sandwich bars, coffee shops and several ethnic
eating places where speedy service and low prices are the priority, whether you're
grabbing a quick lunch or a late-night snack. In any of these, you should be able to fill
up for under £10. Our restaurant listings, meanwhile, concentrate on places where you
can get a sit-down meal, with full service and all the trimmings, usually in the evening
but at lunchtime too. We've also provided a list of the top gastropubs , where you can
eat great, modern food in relaxed surroundings (see box, p.383), and a list of specialist
food stores for top-notch picnic supplies (see p.431).
ESSENTIALS
Costs It is possible to pay an awful lot for a meal in London,
but, compared with many European cities, you can get
considerable value in the mid-range places. Even in the
most expensive restaurants, set menus (most often served
at lunch) can be a great deal, and, as small “sharing plates”
are all the rage, you can eat for a very reasonable price in
some very smart venues.
Tipping Tipping 12.5 to 15 percent for service is usually
discretionary, but considered normal practice. Some
restaurants will add a service charge automatically to the
bill, so it's always worth checking.
