tearooms, and you'll emerge onto the wonderful open space of Richmond Green , one
of London's finest village greens, and one of the most peaceful, except for the planes
overhead on the main flight path into Heathrow. Handsome seventeenth- and
eighteenth-century houses line the southwest and southeast sides of the green, with the
most striking building of all, the flamboyant Richmond Theatre , designed by the great
Frank Matcham in terracotta and brick in 1899, in the northeast corner.

The old town hall, set slightly back from the riverside now houses the library and,
on the top floor, the Richmond Museum . The museum contains a small permanent
exhibition on the history of the town, plus the lowdown on (and a model of ) the old
royal palace; special exhibitions tend to focus on Richmond's past luminaries.
