HAMPTON COURT PALACE
West London: Hammersmith to
Hampton Court
Hammersmith to Hampton Court - a distance of some seven miles overland
(more by the river) - takes you from the tra c-clogged western suburbs of
London to the royal outpost of Hampton Court. In between, London seems
to continue unabated, with only fleeting glimpses of the countryside, in
particular the fabulous Kew Gardens and the two old royal hunting parks,
Richmond and Bushy Park - though, as one nineteenth-century visitor
observed, they are “no more like the real untrimmed genuine country than a
garden is like a field”. Running through this stretch of west London is the
River Thames, once known as the “Great Highway of London” and still the
most pleasant way to travel in these parts during the summer.
