The commercial lifeblood of Brixton pulses most strongly through Brixton Market ,
whose stalls spread out through the warren of streets and covered arcades east of
Brixton Road. Electric Avenue - made famous by Eddy Grant's 1983 hit single - runs
behind the tube station, and is so-called as it was one of the first London shopping
streets to be lit by electricity in the 1880s. A network of interwar arcades, known as
Market Row , runs parallel with the avenue, with another set called Brixton Village
(originally the Granville Arcade), on the other side of Atlantic Road with its main
entrance past the bridge on Coldharbour Lane. These covered streets still harbour a
vibrant mixture of well-established stalls selling Caribbean fruit and veg, bold African
fabrics, religious artefacts, pigs' trotters, Latino street food and much more besides. But
the market is also peppered with a dozen or more trendy new cafés, serving everything
from gluten-free cakes and freshly baked bread to Thai and Mexican food, all following
in the wake of the famous Franco Manca (see p.385) in Market Row. On the north side
of the railway tracks, the market continues along Brixton Station Road, with stalls
