BRIXTON VILLAGE ARCADE
South London
Real and imagined, there's a big divide between north and south London,
certainly as far the residents are concerned. Put simply, north Londoners
generally don't go south, unless they can help it, and yet south London has a
lot of (albeit quite scattered) points of interest. One area stands head and
shoulders above the rest: Greenwich, with its riverside setting, nautical
associations, Baroque architecture and Royal Observatory. Other highlights
include Dulwich, whose public art gallery is older than the National Gallery,
and, on the edge of London, the Arts and Crafts Red House, William Morris's
former home, and Down House, home of Charles Darwin. But south London
is so much more than a hotchpotch of suburban sights, incorporating such
diverse neighbourhoods as Brixton, with its African-Caribbean roots, and
Woolwich, with its military past.
