THE MILLENNIUM BRIDGE
The first bridge to be built across the Thames since Tower Bridge opened in 1894, the sleek,
stainless-steel Millennium Bridge is London's sole pedestrian-only crossing. A suspension
bridge of innovative design - the high-profile triumvirate responsible were sculptor Anthony
Caro, architect Norman Foster and engineers Ove Arup - it famously bounced up and down
when it first opened in 2000 and had to be closed for another two years for repairs. It still
wobbles a bit, but most people are too busy enjoying the spectacular views across to St Paul's
Cathedral and Tate Modern to notice.
The Tate owns works from every period of Picasso 's life, including Weeping Woman ,
which is both a portrait of his lover Dora Maar and a heartfelt response to the Spanish
Civil War. Throughout Tate Modern, you'll also find quite a bit of overlap with Tate
Britain, with works by British artists like Stanley Spencer , whose unique Biblical
visions and domestic scenes are all set in and around his home village of Cookham.
Level 3
In Transformed Visions , the emphasis is on the postwar decades, so there's a fairly wide
selection of abstract expressionist works, with the charge led by Jackson Pollock . It's
here, too, that you can catch perennial Tate favourites like Mark Rothko 's abstract
“Seagram Murals”. Commissioned by the swanky Four Seasons restaurant in New York,
they were withheld by Rothko, who decided he didn't wish his art to be a mere
backdrop to the recreation of the wealthy. There's a wonderfully gloomy seascape by
Emil Nolde and surprising new acquisitions such as Dia al-Azzawi's Guernica-like
depiction of the Sabra and Shatila massacres. Like Rothko, Gerhard Richter gets an
entire room in which to display his six, rather more upbeat, abstract “John Cage”
