Tate Modern is an absolute must for anyone visiting or living in London. Originally
designed as an oil-fired power station by Giles Gilbert Scott, this austere, brick-built
“cathedral of power” was closed down in 1981 and reopened as a modern art gallery
in 2000. The masterful conversion, by the Swiss duo Herzog & de Meuron, has left
plenty of the original industrial feel, while providing wonderfully light and spacious
galleries to show off Tate's impressive collection of international twentieth-century
artists, including the likes of Monet, Duchamp, Moore, Matisse, Mondrian, Picasso,
Pollock, Rothko and Warhol.
Tate Modern receives over five million visitors a year, more than double what was
envisaged. To alleviate this, the Tate has started to expand to the south of the power
station. First came the Tanks, a new rough-edged space for live work, video installations
and performance art, in the power station's subterranean oil tanks. To follow, in 2016,
is the Tate's major new extension , also designed by Herzog & de Meuron, a distorted
prism of latticed bricks rising to 215ft above the oil tanks.
Tate's permanent collection dates back to 1900, but the curators have eschewed a
chronological approach, and gone instead for hanging works according to themes and
-isms. So in among all the attention-grabbing conceptual stuff, you'll find some early
