western, 1920s half of the market has been replaced by an anonymous glass-box mixed

ces and shops development designed by Norman Foster. Part of the original facade
survives on the north side of Brushfield Street; on the south side, the old fruiterers'
shops are occupied by modishly retro businesses, such as Verde & Co, author Jeanette
Winterson's deli venture (see p.378).

Christ Church
is
a characteristically bold church designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor,
completed in 1729 and facing Spitalfields Market from across Commercial Street. The
church's main features are its huge 225ft-high broach spire and giant Tuscan portico,
raised on steps and shaped like a Venetian window (a central arched opening flanked
by two smaller rectangles), a motif repeated in the tower and doors. Inside, there's a
forest of giant columned bays, a hexagonal, embossed ceiling, with a lion and a unicorn
