In-Depth Information
the 1980s - now it's home to Bloomsbury, publishers of Harry Potter. Architecturally,
what you see now is pretty much as it was in the 1770s when it was built by the
Russells (who still own it), though the gates which sealed the square from tra c have
unfortunately been removed, as have all but one of the mews that once accommodated
the coaches and servants of the square's wealthy inhabitants. Today, it's a perfect
example of eighteenth-century symmetry and uniformity: each doorway arch is
decorated with rusticated Coade stones; each palatial facade of the square is broken
only by the white-stuccoed central houses; and the central garden is for residents only.
