EGYPTIAN STATUE
The British Museum
Housed in London's grandest Greek Revival building, fronted by a giant Ionic
colonnade and portico designed by Robert Smirke in the 1820s, the British
Museum is one of the great museums of the world. With over seventy thousand
exhibits ranged over several miles of galleries, it boasts one of the largest
collections of antiquities, prints and drawings housed under one roof - over
thirteen million objects (and growing). Its assortment of Roman and Greek art
is unparalleled, its Egyptian collection is the best outside Egypt and there are
fabulous treasures from Anglo-Saxon and Roman Britain, from Africa, China,
Japan, India and Mesopotamia. You'll clearly never manage to see everything in
one visit, so the best advice is to concentrate on a couple of areas of interest, or
else sign up with one of the museum's excellent guided tours of a single room.
