nonspecific protein adsorption, zwitterionic groups are much more efficient than
PEG. A single monolayer of phosphorylcholine groups is enough to resist
nonspecific protein adsorption, 14 whereas a self-assembled monolayer with six
EG units and an optimized loose structure are required to ensure enough surface
hydration and thus resistance to protein adsorption. 27 In fact, the ability of
resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption of both hydrophilic (PEG and other
related polymers) and zwitterionic polymers are tightly correlated with a
hydration layer near the surface, 18-20 because a tightly bound water layer forms
