IEEE
Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
IEEE 1394
Otherwise known as FireWire. The standard was developed
originally by Apple Computer and then ratified by the IEEE.
IETF
Internet Engineering Task Force. This is a group that develops
and publishes new standards for use on the Internet.
I-frame
An Intra frame is another name for a key frame in a video
sequence.
iLink
The FireWire interface on Sony equipment is referred to by this
brand name.
Indeo Video
This is a video format developed by Intel. It was well supported
on Mac OS 9 but a codec has not been made available for Mac
OS X. Availability on Windows is more common.
Interlaced scanning
A means of doubling the perceived resolution by scanning only
the alternate lines on each pass down the screen. There are two
fields, one each for the odd and even lines being displayed.
Intra coding
Macroblock coding that only refers to other blocks within the
same frame.
Intranet
Your own private network system, which may or may not be
accessible via the Internet.
IP address
The unique numerical network identity for a computer within a
particular sub-network. These values may be duplicated on
other networks.

Integrated Services Digital Network
ISMA
Internet Streaming Media Alliance.
ISO
International Standards Organization.
ITU
International Telecommunications Union.
JMF
Java Media Framework. A useful portable framework for
developing cross-platform and cross-format solutions.
JPEG
Joint Photographic Experts Group.
JVT
Joint Video Team. Formed by combining members of the
ISO/IEC/MPEG working group with the ITU-T/VCEG working
group to develop the H.264 standard. Sometimes used as
another name for H.264 due to the codec being developed by a
Joint Video Team.
Kbps
Kilobits per second.
Kinoma
A codec developed for use with mobile PDA devices.
LAB
Lightness plus color components A and B.
