Profile
Description
Scalable Texture
Supports the mapping of static image textures onto surfaces.
Basic Animated
Provides scalability for Spatial and SNR coding and
2D Texture
mesh-based animation of still images texture-mapped onto
object surfaces. Basic facial animation is also supported.
Advanced Scalable
Very efficient still-image compression. Also adds tiled
Texture (v2)
objects, wavelet coding, arbitrary shapes, and scalability.
Advanced Core (v2)
A combination of Core Visual and Advanced Scalable
Texture Synthetic Visual profiles. Very appropriate for
network-connected interactivity and multimedia.
Hybrid
Designed to support rich-media applications as well as
arbitrary shapes, temporal scaling of video objects, and
some synthetic-object support.
G.3.3
Levels
The profile and level descriptions have been simplified somewhat for MPEG-4, just to
describe the video attributes that are important to us when encoding footage for use in a
target profile and level. There are almost 20 columns of information defined against each
level for each profile but much of that is only of interest to the codec implementer or when
constructing multiple video-object scenarios.
