Networked Files
Video stored in files and shared around a network , among members of a workgroup, or
even across a wider community requires that compression make the best use of the avail-
able storage. Even working at television resolutions rather than those of D-cinema, you
will encounter very large files.
Sport and news departments in major broadcasting companies such as the BBC share
content widely across the organization. Working practices that involve passing around a
single tape simply don't work in the high-pressure broadcasting environment.
The BBC News organization has developed a system in which incoming video is
written straight to disk as it is ingested and as soon as it begins to arrive. Editorial staff can
begin to assemble edits with that incoming video right away. This is operated from a nor-
