In-Depth Information
The ActiveRea©h products comprise a three-part strategy that stops content from
being compromised. Part 1 prevents DVDs from being ripped the way that CDs are
converted into MP3 files. Part 2 protects streams and part 3 is called Hawkeye and is a
peer-to-peer movie-sharing intervention tool.
These three tools are designed to work together to protect the content that might be
compromised by piracy operations and to improve the longevity of a marketing cam-
paign.

Nagravision
Nagra is another manufacturer with a portfolio of its own and collaborative links to other
companies with complementary technology.
Their systems are designed to work with the emerging IPTV and Video-on-Demand
(VOD) systems and digital video recorders (DVRs), and also include the Lysis DRM server-
based systems. These interoperate with the Microsoft DRM mechanisms in Windows
Media. The Lysis DRM system will allow you to aggregate DRM control of Windows Media
9, Real Networks Video, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 content.

MPEG-7 and MPEG-21
The MPEG-7 standard is developing a set of description tools for multimedia. These are
used to manage the metadata associated with multimedia essence that is stored in MPEG-
4 containers, for example. The term essence is used to describe the viewable video content
as opposed to the metadata which describes it. The tools provide a way to identify content
and provide a framework for personalized filtering and reuse of content across multiple
platforms. The information stored also pertains to copyright details but rights control is
left for MPEG-21 to manage.
An example of how MPEG-7 metadata can be searched is presented by the IBM
research center at their Research and Development Web site.
The MPEG-21 standard is all about the design of rights-control mechanisms. This
unifies all the different schemes that are used to control access. MPEG-21 has information
about individuals, their rights of access, and what they are allowed to do. It matches this
with what it knows about the accessibility of an asset. In a compliant implementation, the
combination of the two is the strictly Boolean answer to the question, “Can I access this
asset, on this system, at this instant in time?”
So MPEG-4 allows us to create some essence, MPEG-7 helps us find it, and MPEG-
21 grants us access to use it. You can find out a lot more about this from the MPEGIF
organization.
