Summary of File-Based Video Compression
This chapter has explored some of the file formats and how they work and then looked at
how to spend large amounts of money on disk storage. There are always cheaper solutions
out there but you have to be prepared to compromise on quality or performance. There is
an elastic relationship between cost, quality, and performance: changing one affects the
other two. It is not feasible to have high performance and good quality at very low cost.
Some savings are possible if you don't mind the job taking longer or if you are prepared
to give up some quality to get it done in time.
In the next chapter we'll check out some tape formats, which are alternative storage
mechanisms for video. They more naturally record the bit stream because they are a linear
storage system. These days, however, the tapes might well be used to store files.
