Update the SQL Server services using SQL Server Configuration Manager
from SQL Server 2008 R2 | Configuration Tools and select the appropriate
program group on the server
Always use SQL Server Configuration Manager to attempt any
password changes to the SQL Server services account. The
advantage is the password for the account is updated immediately
and will take effect as soon as the specified service is restarted.

Similarly the best practice is to use a local service account with Administrator
privileges on SQL Server and a Local server to perform the necessary tasks
on Administration.
