How it works...
What we have used is Extended Events with ETW and TRACERPT tools to correlate data from
the operating system and SQL Server engine. In a way, Extended Events is helpful to monitor
and troubleshoot the long running queries on the server. This is helpful to take pro-active
action when the server is experiencing severe performance issues causing client applications
to timeout.
At this point, we have opened a Dedicated administrative Console (DAC) connection to perform
the Extended Events process by directing the server related issues output to ETW. The output
is written to a file that is created on a drive that does not use either the page file or SQL Server
database files. Then, we allowed the traces to run for few minutes then closed both extended
events and Windows Kernel trace. Now, we have used the tracerpt.exe file that will correlate
both Windows trace and SQL Server ETW trace into one file for a better flow of information.
