Getting ready
The SQL Server Best Practices Analyzer tool can be installed on a desktop machine or a
central windows server to analyze and evaluate the SQL Server platform. The following list
contains the software and system prerequisites for installing the Best Practices Analyzer tool:
F Any one of the following operating systems can be used:
Windows Server 2003/Windows Server 2008/Windows Server 2008 R2/
Windows Vista/Windows 7
F PowerShell V2.0 will be installed by default on Windows Server 2008 R2 and
Windows 7. Otherwise, the package can be downloaded from: http://support.
microsoft.com/kb/968929 and installed by expanding the downloaded .msi
package file.
F Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer (MBCA) V2.0 can be downloaded from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=
en&FamilyID=1b6e9026-f505-403e-84c3-a5dea704ec67 and installed by
expanding the downloaded MBCA_Setup32.msi package file.
F SQL Server 2008 R2 BPA is freely available for download from: http://www.
microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID
=0fd439d7-4bff-4df7-a52f-9a1be8725591 .
F The BPA tool can be downloaded and installed for a 64 bit or 32 bit environment.
F If SQL Server 2008 R2 BPA is installed on a standalone machine then open a
PowerShell 2.0 command prompt, using an administrative account and enable
Powershell Remoting using the command Enable-PSRemoting .
How to do it...
Once the earlier mentioned prerequisite software is installed and BPA is downloaded, you will
need to complete the following steps to implement SQL Server Best Practices Analyzer in an
existing environment:
1.
Open the MBCA tool, which is installed as a standalone program from
Start | Programs.
2.
At the Select a product option, click on the drop-down box to select SQL Server 2008
R2 BPA and click on Start Scan to run.
