How to do it...
In this recipe, we will follow a two-step approach that will run through the SharePoint 2010
installation steps with a subsequent number of steps to choose relevant SQL Server 2008
R2 Analysis Services installation options and SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint. The
SharePoint Server 2010 installation offers a choice between a standalone or a server farm
installation. The following steps are required to install SharePoint 2010 services:
1. Insert the installation media or open a folder that contains the setup files for
SharePoint 2010.
2. Run the Prerequisite Installer to add the required operating system roles,
features, and other software required for your installation.
3. Run SharePoint Server Setup to install the server software. Accept the Microsoft
Software License Terms of agreement, and then click Continue.
4. Click Server Farm.
The Standalone installation is intended for single-server deployments. It
installs SQL Server 2008 Express Edition and the required SharePoint
components on a single host server. The Standalone option precludes the
ability to scale out SSAS deployments.
To overcome the limitations, it is essential to choose Server Farm to
provide a flexible and scaled-out configuration. This option will enable
the SQL Server database to be hosted by one server and the SharePoint
application and Web front-end roles are consolidated onto another server.
