In-Depth Information
They call this causeway between Cape Coral and Matlacha the 'fishingest bridge in the
US,' sitting as it does at the center of several dynamic tidal flows. Anglers are here liter-
ally 24/7, especially during tarpon season.

Cruises and ferries to Cayo Costa depart from Jug Creek Marina. Ferries (adult/child $32/
25) take an hour; other options include stops at Cabbage Key for lunch (adult/child $27/

island-hopping to Useppa and Gasparilla Island.
Gulf Coast Kayak KAYAKING
( 239-283-1125; www.gulfcoastkayak.com ; 4530 NW Pine Island Rd)
In Matlacha, just past the drawbridge, Gulf Coast offers several kayak tours (per person
$56) in the wildlife-rich Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve. You can also rent a canoe or
kayak (half-/full day $35/50) and paddle yourself. Want to kayak to Cayo Costa? Talk to
them.
THE GREAT CALUSA BLUEWAY
With almost 200 miles of kayaking routes, the Great Calusa Blueway
( www.calusablueway.com ) is like a watery circulation system that snakes throughout Lee
County, much of it hugging the coast of Pine Island, and extending further afield to the
shores of Cayo Costa, Captiva and Sanibel Islands, Fort Myers Beach and down to Bonita
Springs. The warm, calm waters are a joy to paddle, and there's a lot you miss on land
that's only visible by boat. Check the website for 'trails' and where they can be accessed.
