For variety, quality and price, it's hard to beat Guppy's, which packs diners in nightly. Pre-
parations are diverse, skillfully spanning styles (and budgets), from Italian cioppino to
Hawaiian seared ahi and Caribbean spice-rubbed grouper. The only problem: it doesn't
take reservations, though its 'call-ahead seating' gets your name on the wait list before ar-
rival.

Since the 1950s, Ted Peter's has been smoking fresh salmon, mackerel, mahimahi and
mullet in the little smokehouse here, then dishing it up whole or in sandwich spreads. You
eat at outdoor picnic tables; nothing fancy. Cash only. Pasadena Ave is on the mainland
side of the Corey Causeway.

Under Bruce Caplan's eagle eye sumptuous classics such as steak Diane, duck à l'orange,
coquilles St Jacques and sole meunière are sautéed, brandied and flambéed tableside for
tongue-tingling flavor. Go the whole hog and splash out on a spicy, black-cherry flavored
Silver Oak Alexander Valley cabernet from the glassed-in wine cellar

This contemporary, upscale harborside eatery puts everything on display: the basement
wine cellar through a floor cutaway, the waterfront from sweeping windows and the out-
door deck, and the open kitchen's wood-fired grill, where seafood and steaks sizzle at a
promised 1200°F (650°C).
