Like a patchwork quilt of variegated greens tossed out over Tampa Bay, this 3700-acre
preserve protects a diverse aquatic and wetland ecosystem. At the heart of the preserve is
the excellent Cultural and Natural History Center (open from 9am to 4pm) where you
can browse exhibits about the natural environment and the early Weedon Island people.
Sign-up also for interpretive hikes over miles of boardwalk or go it alone with the online
map. Alternatively rent a kayak from Sweetwater Kayaks and head out on the 4-mile
South Trail loop through the idyllic mangrove islands.
The preserve is located on Riviera Bay, south off I-92.

This local outfitter has the largest selection of seawater kayaks in the area. A knowledge-
able staff also leads lessons in foundation skills, sea kayaking and paddleboard yoga, and
heads up tours (with/without kayak rental $25/55) of Weedon Island Preserve and other
nearby St Pete waterways.
Pinellas Trail CYCLING, RUNNING

This 47-mile county-maintained trail calls to dedicated urban cyclists and runners. A con-
verted railway, the paved path starts along 1st Ave S and Bayshore Dr in St Petersburg and
continues, through town, country and suburb, north to Tarpon Springs. Download trail

A low-key, hidden oasis, Boyd Hill has nearly 4 miles of nature trails and boardwalks
amid its 245 acres of pine flatwoods and swampy woodlands. Alligators, snowy egrets and
bald eagles are among the wildlife you might see. From downtown, follow Martin Luther
King Jr Blvd (9th St) south to 50th Ave and follow signs.
