In-Depth Information
The pretty 112-site campground (sites $24) has good facilities and solar-heated hot wa-
ter, but not a lot of privacy. Spots along the river are prime, and camping is best (and
busiest) during the October to March dry season (book up to a year in advance). Midweek
is always less busy.
From Tampa, take Fowler Ave/Hwy 582 east to US 301 N; it's about 9 miles.
St Petersburg
Long known as little more than a bawdy spring-break party town and a retirement capital,
St Petersburg is now forging a new name for itself as a culturally savvy Southern city.
Spurred on by its redeveloped waterfront, revitalized historic district and stunning DalĂ
Museum, the downtown energy is creeping up Central Ave, spawning sophisticated res-
taurants, craft breweries, farmers markets and artsy galleries, all of which are attracting a
younger professional crowd and a new wave of culturally curious travelers.
