ROADSIDE ATTRACTION: THE ORANGE SHOP
Follow the billboards to the hamlet of Citra, just outside Cross Creek, where you'll find the
Orange Shop ( 352-595-3361; www.floridaorangeshop.com ; 18545 US Hwy 301; 8am-5pm
mid-Oct-May), a retro orange-themed souvenir shop hawking 10lb bags of Florida oranges,
bottles of orange-blossom honey, orange marmalade, orange gel candies, novelty orange-
shaped chewing gum and other kitschy Florida goodies. Visitors are treated to a free Dixie
Cup of fresh-squeezed orange juice from the backyard grove.
Eating
The heavy student population keeps Gainesville's restaurant scene on its toes. The variety
of cheap eats is a great reason to visit.
Krishna House VEGETARIAN
(
352-222-2886; www.krishnalunch.com ; 214 NW 14th St;
noon-3pm Mon-Fri during school ses-
sions)
For tasty vegetarian soul food on a budget, head to Krishna House on the UF campus,
make a small donation and fill your belly. Who said there's no such thing as a (karma) free
lunch?
Satchel's Pizza PIZZA
( GOOGLE MAP ;
352-335-7272; www.satchelspizza.com ; 1800 NE 23rd Ave; menu items $3-15;
11am-10pm Tue-Sat)
Almost destroyed by fire in 2012, Satchel's is back to restake its claim to the best pizza on
Florida's east coast. Grab a seat at a mosaic courtyard table or in the back of a gutted 1965
Ford Falcon. Most nights there's live music in the Back 40 Bar, with its head-scratchingly
eccentric collection of trash and treasure. Satchel's takes cash only; the fees from the on-
site ATM go to charity. There's always a wait, so just kick back, down a beer and watch
the peeps.
