Shaded by an ancient oak, this sweet yellow-and-stone cottage smells of homemade cook-
ies and looks like your grandma's house - in a good way (painted flowers on the wall,
snowy white quilts, holiday decorations). It's located in a quiet residential neighborhood
near downtown.
PARKING-LOT PREACHING
Back in 1954, when the old Neptune Drive-in Theater closed, this car-obsessed town de-
vised a novel solution for increasing church attendance: services people could attend
while remaining in their cars.
At Daytona Beach Drive-In Christian Church ( GOOGLE MAP ; 386-767-8761;
www.driveinchurch.net ; 3140 S Atlantic Ave; services 8:30am & 10am Sun) you can get your
daily dose of (Protestant) religion from the comfort of your car. Pull in to the former drive-
in movie theater, hook up a speaker or tune your radio to 680AM or 88.5FM and behold
the word of…the Reverend. He and the choir hold services on a balcony overlooking the
sea of cars. There's free coffee and donuts between services. That's right…'free donuts' -
what are you waiting for? Only in Daytona.
Eating
It may feel like Daytona's a wasteland of fast food and biker bars, but there are quite a few
restaurants that break out of the burgers-n-beer mold. The newly revitalized downtown has
several good choices, while the beach remains fairly tourist trap-y.
