In-Depth Information
This 65-strong, not-for-profit orchestra has been bringing music to Melbourne residents
for over 60 years and is one of the finest in the country. For the July 4 celebrations the
symphony plays at the Cocoa Riverfront Park beneath a spectacular firework display.
Sebastian Inlet & Around
Continuing south along Hwy A1A, development trickles beyond sleepy Melbourne Beach.
You'll find plenty of access to beaches, hiking and birding along both the Atlantic Coast
and the Indian River. Just south of Sebastian Inlet State Park, mile after mile of tidy
hedges and bike paths line the highway, hiding the upscale homes of northern Vero Beach.
Sights & Activities
The following recommended sights, all along Hwy A1A, are listed geographically from
north to south.
Sebastian Inlet State Park PARK
( 321-984-4852; www.floridastateparks.org/sebastianinlet ; 9700 South State Rd; cyclist/vehicle
$2/8; dawn-dusk)
Stretching along a narrow strip of the barrier island, this busy park, popular with fisher-
men, surfers, boaters and families, is divided into two sections by the inlet bridge. On the
north side swimming is safe for children in the calm-water lagoon; on the south you'll find
a marina ( 321-724-5424; www.sebastianinlet.com ; 9502 South Hwy A1A; 8am-5pm) with
boat rental, a small fishing museum and an uninspiring campground ($28 per site).
In June and July you can join ranger-led nesting walks (reservations necessary).
McClarty Treasure Museum MUSEUM
( 772-589-2147; Hwy A1A; adult/child under 6yr $2/free; 10am-4pm)
In 1715 a Spanish ship carrying gold and treasures went down in a hurricane, and surviv-
ors built a makeshift camp. This small museum, featuring a 45-minute movie, dioramas
and artifacts from the shipwreck, sits on the site of that wreck. Even today, folks looking
for a pretty shell stumble upon treasures washed ashore. The museum is 1 mile south of
Sebastian Inlet State Park.
