on these shores for five centuries prior to European contact. It can be reached via hiking
trails from Apollo Beach and offers panoramic views over the park and ocean.
Eldora State House Museum HISTORIC BUILDING
( 10am-4pm Sat & Sun)
Eldora was a small waterfront community of around 100 citrus farmers and fishermen,
many of them veterans of the Civil War, who settled here between 1877 and 1900. The
town depended on the waterway for supplies, tourists and transportation. It was fairly
prosperous - at least prosperous enough for the construction of the colonial-revival Eldora
House, which has now been renovated as a small house museum detailing the life of the
settler community via photos, videos and artefacts.
To reach the house, take the Eldora Trail at parking area 8 in the North District. The trail
winds through a coastal hammock to the shoreline of Mosquito Lagoon, where you'll find
the house.
Apollo Beach BEACH
This 6-mile beach, at the northern end of the park and immediately south of New Smyrna,
attracts families. It has boardwalk access (wheelchair accessible), and a longer stretch of
road along the dunes with fewer parking lots than at Playalinda. There are several hiking
trails nearby, including the Eldora Trail . It feels more isolated and is perfect for cycling.
Klondike Beach BEACH
The stretch between Apollo and Playalinda is as pristine as it gets: there are no roads and
it's accessible only on foot or by bike (if you can ride on the beach). You need to obtain a
back-country permit ($2 per person per day) from the entrance station before setting off.
Playalinda Beach BEACH
At the southern end of Mosquito Lagoon, Playalinda is popular with surfers. Boardwalks
provide beach access, but only 2 miles of park road parallel the dunes and there are more
parking lots than at Apollo, with fewer opportunities to access the lagoon.
