architecture to build the place into a fancy-pants town. His fingerprints remain on numer-
ous structures throughout the area, though his name is most often invoked when talking
about the popular anchor of town - the alfresco mall, Mizner Park. The rest of Boca is a
mostly mainstream collection of chain stores and restaurants and, as you near the ocean,
some peaceful beaches and parks. Most people don't come to Boca on vacation unless they
have family here, as there are almost no beachfront hotels.
Sights & Activities
Since Boca lacks a cohesive downtown, Mizner Park ( GOOGLE MAP ; www.miznerpark.com )
generally serves as the city's center. At the north end, the Count de Hoernle Amphitheater
accommodates more than 4000 people for symphonies, ballet, rock concerts and other cul-
tural events.
Gumbo Limbo Nature Center PARK

tion; 9am-4pm Mon-Sat, noon-4pm Sun; )
Boca's best asset is this stretch of waterfront parkland. It's a preserve of tropical hammock
and dunes ecosystems, and a haven for all manner of sea creatures and birds. Dedicated to
educating the public about sea turtles and other local fauna, the natural-history displays in-
clude saltwater tanks full of critters. The highlight is the brand-new sea-turtle rehabilita-
tion center, which is open for 90-minute tours (10am and 1pm from Monday to Saturday;
1pm Sundays).
The preserve also has a number of secluded hikes. These take you along elevated board-
walks through tropical foliage and along an artificial mangrove wetland, reclaimed using
filtered wastewater from the city.
Boca Raton Museum of Art MUSEUM
( GOOGLE MAP ; 561-392-2500; www.bocamuseum.org ; 501 Plaza Real; adult/student $14/6;
10am-5pm Tue-Fri, noon-5pm Sat & Sun)
In Mizner Park, this elegant museum showcases the minor works of modern masters such
as Picasso, Chagall and Modigliani. It also has a genuinely worthwhile collection of pieces
by 20th- and 21st-century American and European painters, sculptors and photographers.
