In-Depth Information
portholes? Almost all of the preserved buildings here still inspire this child-
like sense of wonder.
Bas-Relief & Friezes
Although art deco was inspired by stripped-down modernist aesthetics, it also re-
belled against utilitarianism. Its bas-relief and frieze work is noticeable on the exteri-
or of many South Beach hotels.
Portholes
The deco movement came about in the early 20th century, when affordable travel be-
came a reality for the developed world. Sea journeys were the height of luxury and
many deco buildings are decorated with nautical porthole windows.
Berkeley Shore Hotel
One of the older hotels in South Beach, the Berkeley Shore, at 1610 Collins Ave, has
a striking exterior set off by a cylindrical 'prow' rising out of shade-providing 'eye-
brows,' plus elegant exterior friezes.
Avalon Hotel
The exterior of the Avalon, at 700 Ocean Dr, is a fantastic example of classical art-
deco architecture - clean lines, old-school signage lit up in tropical green, with a
1950s Oldsmobile parked outside.
