CRICKET - IT'S A PITCH
Cricket in South Florida? Really? Oh yes. There's a huge West Indian and Jamaican com-
munity in South Florida, plus a very sizable British expat population. As such cricket is ac-
tually quite popular in these parts. The South Florida Cricket Alliance ( 954-805-2922;
www.southfloridacricket.com ) is one of the largest cricket clubs in the US, the Cricket Coun-
cil of the USA ( www.cricketcouncilusa.com ) is based in Boca Raton, and the first dedic-
ated cricket pitch in the country opened in Lauderhill (where the population is 25% West
Indian), north of Fort Lauderdale, in 2008. Contact any of the above if you'd like to watch
a match or join a team.
Shopping
There are two main shopping strips in South Beach - Lincoln Rd Mall, a pedestrian road
lined with a great mix of indie shops and chain stores; and the southern end of Collins
Ave, below 9th St. Here you'll find mostly high-end chains like A/X, Ralph Lauren and
Barney's Co-op. Shooting way north of here, you'll find two extremely popular shopping
malls: the Aventura Mall ( GOOGLE MAP ; www.shopaventuramall.com ; 19501 Biscayne Blvd,
Aventura) , a mainstream collection including JC Penney and Bloomingdale's, and the chi-
chi Bal Harbour Shops ( GOOGLE MAP ; www.balharbourshops.com ; 9700 Collins Ave) , a
classy scene boasting Prada, Gucci, Chanel and Saks Fifth Avenue outposts. Bal Harbour
is located about 3 miles north of North Miami Beach; Aventura is 9 miles north of North
Miami Beach.
Move over to the mainland and there are a few options, the hippest being the Design
District where you'll find a glut of art and homewares plus clothing and accessories
hawkers. You'll have an easier time at the touristy, chain-store-drenched Bayside Market-
place ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; www.baysidemarketplace.com ; 401 Biscayne Blvd) , on the shores of
downtown Miami. Find more outdoor malls in Coconut Grove, at the ever-popular Co-
coWalk ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 3015 Grand Ave) and Streets of Mayfair ( MAP
GOOGLE MAP ; www.mayfairinthegrove.net ; 2911 Grand Ave) ; Coral Gables meanwhile, has its
Miracle Mile and the classy Village of Merrick Park ( MAP GOOGLE MAP ;
