ART WALKS: THE NEW CLUBBING?
It's hipsters gone wild! Or to put it another way: it's free wine! And artsy types, and galler-
ies open till late, and the eye candy of a club, and the drunken momentum of a pub crawl
and - best of all - no red ropes. The Wynwood & Design District Art Walks are one of the
best nightlife experiences in Miami. The experience of strolling from gallery to gallery
('That piece is gorgeous. Pour me another'), perusing the paintings ('No, I don't think
there's a bathroom behind the performance artist') and delving into the nuances of aes-
thetic styles ('The wine's run out? Let's bounce') is as genuinely innovative as…well, the
best contemporary art. Just be careful, as a lot of galleries in Wynwood are separated by
short drives (the Design District is more walkable). Art Walks take place on the second
Saturday of each month, from 7pm to 10pm (some galleries stretch to 11pm); when it's all
over, lots of folks repair to Wood Tavern or Bardot . Visit artofmiami.com/maps/art-walks
for information on participating galleries.

Drive out about halfway to the Everglades (just kidding, but only just) and you'll find Co-
vacha, the most hidden, most hip Latin scene in Miami. Actually, it's not hidden; all the
young Latinos know about Covacha and love it well, and we do too. It's an excellent spot
to see new bands, upcoming DJs (almost all local), an enormous crowd and few tourists.
Covacha is out in Doral, a good 14 miles west of downtown Miami.
Entertainment
Miami's artistic merits are obvious, even from a distance. Could there be a better creative
base? There's Southern homegrown talent, migratory snowbirds bringing the funding and
attention of northeastern galleries, and immigrants from across the Americas. These dis-
parate cultures communicate their values via the language of expression. Creole, Spanish
and English, after all, are poor languages compared to dance, music and theater.
