Silver Sands: aren't you cute, with your one-story, stucco tropical tweeness? How this
little, Old Florida-style independent resort has survived amid the corporate competition is
beyond us, but it's definitely a warm, homey spot for those seeking some intimate, indi-
vidual attention - to say nothing of the sunny courtyard, garden area and outdoor pool.

Many Ritz-Carlton outposts feel a little cookie-cutter, but the Key Biscayne outpost of the
empire is pretty unique. There's the magnificent lobby, vaulted by four giant columns lif-
ted from a Cecil B DeMille set - hell, the whole hotel is lifted from a DeMille set. Tink-
ling fountains, the view of the bay and the marble grandeur speak less of a chain hotel and
more of early-20th-century glamour. Rooms and amenities are predictably excellent.
