In-Depth Information
While everyone else was trying to get all modern, the Raleigh painstakingly tried to restore
itself to prewar glory. It succeeded in a big way. Celebrity hotelier André Balazs has man-
aged to capture a tobacco-and-dark-wood men's club ambience and old-school elegance
while sneaking in modern design and amenities. Have a swim in the stunning pool; Holly-
wood actress Esther Williams used to.

Al Capone used to stay here; maybe he liked the deco ceiling lamps in the lobby, with their
sharp, retro sci-fi lines and grand-Gothic proportions, and the oddly placed oriental mirrors
(which have nothing to do with art deco whatsoever). The rooms, with their dark-wood ac-
cents and ice-white bedspreads, are a bit warmer than your average South Beach digs.

Simply put, the Surfrcomber is one of the best deco structures in Miami. Note the
movement-suggestive lines on the exterior and semicircular, shade-providing 'eyebrows'
that jut out of the windows. The rounded, aeronautical feel of the lobby suggests you're
entering a 1930s airline lounge but no, you're just going to your room, which replicates
the classic deco and modern design marriage of the front.

Even the trolleys here have a touch of curvy deco flair, to say nothing of the chunky stair-
case and mezzanine, which are the best South Beach examples of the building-as-cruise-
liner deco theme. The shipboard theme carries into the rooms, which are also offset by
bright whites and minty color accents.
