attendant bars, restaurants, clubs and pool built into this complex are some of the most
well regarded on the beach.
Cadet Hotel BOUTIQUE HOTEL

)
From paper lanterns hanging from ceilings to furry throw rugs; from clamshell designs en-
capsulating large mirrors to classical Asian furniture; and, as always, a great art-deco
facade, the Cadet has the aesthetics right. Check out the shaded verandah at the back, lifted
from a fantasy idea of what a plantation should feel like.
Betsy Hotel BOUTIQUE HOTEL
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ;

)
The Betsy's rooms present a sort of blend of Caribbean plantation and modern IKEA store;
pastel and tropical color schemes blot into the usual South Beach monochrome white,
which makes for an elegant but friendly vibe. The exterior suggests much the same spirit,
but given the elite set this hotel attracts, areas like the lobby and the pool feel more exclus-
ive and self-assured. The shutter-style doors that frame the windows within the rooms are
a nice touch, as are the walnut floors and bath mirrors with inbuilt LCD TVs.
Cardozo Hotel BOUTIQUE HOTEL
( MAP GOOGLE MAP ; 305-535-6500, 800-782-6500; www.cardozohotel.com ; 1300 Ocean Dr; r
$230-290, ste $320-460; )
The Cardozo and its neighbor, the Carlyle, were the first deco hotels saved by the Miami
Design Preservation League, and in the case of the Cardozo, we think they saved the best
first. It's the combination of the usual contemporary sexiness (white walls, hardwood
floors, high-thread-count sheets) and playful embellishments: leopard-print details, hand-
made furniture and a general sense that, yes, you are cool if you stay here, but you don't
have to flaunt it. Oh - remember the 'hair gel' scene in There's Something About Mary ?
